The Pupil Premium is funding provided to schools which is additional to main school funding. It is allocated according to the number of pupils on the school roll who are eligible for free school meals (FSM), children of service families, children in care or any children who have been in those groups within the last 6 years.  This is because these groups of children are identified nationally as most likely to be achieving less successfully than other groups in the school.

It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision, if any, should be made for these pupils.  The funding must be spent in a way that leads to improved attainment for these and other groups who the school may have identified as vulnerable to falling behind their peers.  Schools have a responsibility to make sure that:

• these pupils are identified and provision is put in place for them
• the school uses a range of evidence to identify the needs of these pupils and puts plans in place that positively impacts their attainment
• the funding is spent efficiently and there is evidence to support that the provision is effective
